Arakawa Under the Bridge is an anime from studio »SHAFT Inc.« that falls into the main genre of Comedy. This will appeal to people who can relate to having love or those who know the flipside of the ideal love and would like to see what it is. And for the most part, the series works. Also, near the end of the season Arrakawa Under the Bridge has an on-going plot concerning the possible evacuation of the cast being from the Arakawa river. Success is written in his face and takes pride of it—all the time. We might expect to see the serious part of the story developed better in the season two, but I wouldn't bet on that. STORY SECTION: 3/10 The story … yeah, typical SHAFT. The soundtrack was good, with a variety of styles. From a point on they even feel tedious and tiresome. ART SECTION: 7/10 If you take into account what I wrote in my previous SHAFT comedy reviews (that’s right you suckers, go read those too) you will pretty much see there is little to talk about visuals, other than being artistic, full of fast panel switches, weird use of colors and shapes, throwing in real photographs and bizarre imagery from a myriad symbolisms and allusions to social and mental status of each situation. Arakawa under the Bridge may look like an anime for potheads (what with the kappa costume, star mask, and nun with a gun, among other things), but truthfully it’s just a thirteen-episode-long plate of sashimi: it takes a little getting used to, but ends up being absolutely delicious. It may sound and look shallow, but the show is deeper if you’re willing to give it a go, and I recommend that you do. It also works because Kou, for all his strengths (smart, handsome, rich), has a lot to learn about common sense and courtesy around his new neighbors. This is the continued adventures of the new recruit, Kou, and his 'girlfriend' Nino, a girl claiming to be from Venus, and the other Arakawa riverside misfits such as a musician with a star mask, a transvestite ex-soldier who dresses as a nun and the mayor who claims to be a kappa. In the end, one finds Kou and Nino’s bond charming but not arresting. Not a classic by any means, but certainly worth a watch for those who like comedy.
